Chapter 14

PROOF

Garrett’s eyes slowly opened to the faint outline of the ceiling back in his room. It was night once again, with a small amount of moonlight pouring into the room. He sluggishly propped himself up on his elbows and rubbed his sore eyes, feeling for sure that they would be red and bleary. As they finally adjusted to the environment, he looked up to the clock on the wall. The familiar blue lines representing numbers stared back at him, as usual, reading 3:00 a.m.

This clockwork-like sleeping pattern failed to surprise him this time, instead becoming more of a frustration, as he knew that his door would not unlock for another four hours. He looked around to see that the pulse monitor was gone along with the mobile pole it was attached to. The rest of the room remained the same, with next to nothing in it.

He suddenly remembered his latest problem, the issue of not knowing his last name. Sweat tingled down his spine with this memory, as he tried to forget about it, thinking that he must have sustained some memory loss during his surgery. There was no other explanation that he could think of that didn’t make him feel angry. With nothing else to do, he routinely got up and headed for the bathroom.

Garrett felt into the bathroom as usual and flicked on the light, making his way into the space. A lone figure appeared out of nowhere, startling him so much, he fell back into the wall behind. There was a mirror, a mirror that hadn’t been there one day prior but which now sat above the sink in the form of a large rectangle of reflective glass. The glass was perfect and streak-free, clearly brand new and freshly installed. Attached to the side was a smaller mirror that folded outward, placed there for his convenience.

He moved his way toward the mirror, eager to inspect himself for problems. He looked unfavorably at the reflection that was his shaved head and slowly ran his palm over his dome until his fingers touched the back of his head. Gingerly he removed the bandage covering the section of his skull where he had been shot, not knowing what to expect. As the bandage slowly peeled off, the side mirror revealed a reddish area that progressively got worse, becoming a badly traumatized wound with a massive surgical scar zigzagging down the middle.

His first visual of this wound sent a sickness to the pit of his stomach that he had never felt, forcing him quickly to cover up the trauma. Curious, however, he quickly undid the bandage again. He studied the scar in detail, running his finger within an inch of the bloodied line. The line of stitches started at the base of his head and zigzagged evenly up the middle of his skull. One strange thing he noticed was the way it suddenly swooped up and to the left at the top of the four-inch wound.
